Lets Set The Record Straight.
Dear Friends,
Last week in the Blount Today newspaper, Raymond Finney ran a full page ad attacking me.
His misleading attack, although not a surprise, is disappointing and serves as a reminder
as to why I’m seeking to serve Blount and Sevier counties in the State Senate.
We are in the last few weeks of the 2008 legislative session, a time when we should
be working together on the issues facing our State, such as balancing the budget,
making long-term care options more available for our seniors, and preserving state
funding for our schools, not attacking each other.
Instead of working cooperatively with me on the critical issues facing us and our families,
he tries to question my solid conservative Republican credentials. I’m not sure where he’s
been, but you know better.
As a life-long Republican, I have worked hard over the years to elect Republicans to
office, like Howard Baker, Lamar Alexander, Jimmy Quillen, John Duncan, Jimmy
Duncan, Winfield Dunn, Bill Frist, Bob Corker, and Fred Thompson, to name a few.
In fact, on the very day I first heard of his attack on me, I was addressing the State
Convention of the Tennessee College Republicans – at their invitation.
Many of you know that almost thirty years ago I worked along side Attorney
General Mike Flynn to restart the Blount County Young Republicans. I have served on the Blount County Republican Executive Committee, served as parliamentarian of the State Republican Executive Committee, and have now carried the banner of the Republican Party into a half dozen general elections.
Raymond also questions the ability of the members of the state legislature, who like me,
sacrifice time away from their jobs to serve in the General Assembly. Again, I believe you
know better. One of the strengths of the General Assembly is that it is made up of people who have real jobs and consider public service a privilege, rather than something to do
in retirement.
In closing, I thought you deserved to know these things. While there are things about
Raymond’s record I could say, now is not the time for politics as usual and personal
attacks. Now is the time to work together for the good of our State.
Blount and Sevier counties deserve better and that is what I’m offering during this
campaign for State Senate. I will always be accessible and available to you and will continue
to listen and consider your thoughts and views as I have through 30 years of public service.
It is a privilege to serve as your representative.
Sincerely,
Doug Overbey
