State Rep. Doug Overbey, R-Maryville, gained unanimous passage Wednesday on the floor of the House for his legislation placing additional disclosure requirements on convicted sex offenders.

House Bill 2585 requires sex offenders to provide Internet account information such as e-mail addresses, user names and aliases on the sex offender registry and to notify their designated law enforcement agency within three days of any changes to such information.

“Because one in five teenagers who regularly log on to the Internet say they have received an unwanted sexual advance and with there being more than 600,000 registered sex offenders in the U.S., it is important that e-mail addresses, users names and aliases of sex offenders be available on the sex offender registry and to law enforcement,” Overbey said. “It’s important for the law to be as specific as possible in these situations, and I believe this is a significant improvement for the safety of our children.”

The companion bill, SB2594, passed in the Senate earlier this session, and the legislation now goes to the governor
