NASHVILLE – Representative Doug Overbey (R-Maryville) was recognized on the Floor of the House on Tuesday by the reading of House Joint Resolution 1299, filed by members of the House Republican Caucus in honor of Rep. Overbey’s eight years of service in the state House. The Resolution was unanimously adopted by the House on May 1 and the Senate on May 7 and signed by Governor Bredesen on May 20, 2008.
The Resolution, sponsored by House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower (R-Bristol), recites many of Overbey’s legislative accomplishment and awards. With regard to his service in the General Assembly, the Resolution provides, in part:
During his four terms and eight years in the House of Representatives, Doug Overbey was prominent in his role as a dedicated and well-informed legislator who always voted his conscience; and . . . was a dynamic and aggressive participant in the legislative process and earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues for the outstanding contributions he made as Chairman of the House Health Care Facilities Subcommittee, as Secretary of the Joint Select Committee on Children and Youth, as a member of the House Rules, Ethics, Health and Human Resources, and the Finance, Ways, and Means Committees, and as a member of the House Budget and Professional Occupations Subcommittees.
“It has been a privilege to serve with Doug Overbey,” said Leader Mumpower. “His insight and wisdom has truly been an asset to our Caucus, and we are sad to see him leave the House. We wish him well on future pursuits.”
In accepting the Resolution, Overbey thanked his colleagues and gave credit for success in passing legislation to the members of the committees which had considered his legislative proposals. Overbey particularly complimented Rep. Joe McCord (R-Maryville) and Rep. Richard Montgomery (R-Seymour) for their legislative support and guidance.
“It is gratifying to be recognized by one’s colleagues,” Overbey said. “Serving as a member of the General Assembly is a singular honor and great responsibility. I’m grateful to the citizens of Blount County for giving me the opportunity to serve.”
On Wednesday, May 21, 2008, Overbey was also honored by being invited to the podium of the House to serve as the presiding office. Overbey served as presiding officer of the House during the morning legislative session and presided over the debate on several pieces of legislation.
“It was quite a surprise to be to be invited to preside over some of today’s proceedings and wield the gavel,” Overbey said. “My service in the House and the opportunity to serve, even temporarily, as the presiding officer will remain treasured memories.”
