Dear Editor:
While representing Blount County in the Tennessee State House of Representatives, Doug Overbey has been a devoted supporter of veterans and their families. As a disabled veteran, I am writing to you to commend him for his work and express my support for his election to the state senate.
As Americans, we all owe a great debt of gratitude to those who have served and sacrificed for our country. Effective legislation that helps veterans as well as their families should be one of our top priorities in the state Legislature.
One of the first pieces of legislation Doug introduced and passed in the House was HB 2227, which changed the qualifying period of confinement as a POW for 100 percent disabled veterans seeking property tax relief from five months to 30 days. In the next session, Doug passed legislation that removed the qualifying period as a whole. He also has gained passage of the law that allows all service-related totally disabled veterans to qualify for property tax relief.
In 2006, Representative Overbey sponsored and gained passage of legislation granting property tax relief to surviving spouses of members of the armed services killed in combat, helping families of veterans across Tennessee.
In his eight years as a legislator, Doug has tirelessly championed veteran issues and legislation that supports Tennesseans who sacrificed everything for our freedom. I firmly believe we need Doug to continue this hard work in the Tennessee State Senate.
Sincerely,
Rick Vickery
